Backcombing adive! I'm a boy so please explain basics?

Well i am a major glam fan and hav shoulder length hair. Got it feathered today so i can go down the Motley Crue root (none of u will know them so look at the links below), but please where do i go from here?

Spray your ROOTS with either volume spray or a strong hold hair spray. Start at the top, near your crease. Then using a brush with bristles close together, start to brush you hair backwards from tip to root. You'll need loads of hairspray as you need to repeat this a few times.
It would be easier if you sectioned off your hair [using clips etc]
Keep fluffing your hair with your hands [pushing it up]
Repeat this making your way down your head away from your crease.
Really it depends on whether you want total volume or just the top bits like the guy in the first pic.
