Are hair straighteners useful for hair that is somewhat wavy, thick, and long?

Resolved Question

Are hair straighteners useful for hair that is somewhat wavy, thick, and long?

My mom thinks that I have straight hair. I think that it's wavy and thick (she knows my hair is thick). She won't let me get a hair straightener because she thinks they are for people with curly hair. I told her that they can also be used for people with thick hair who want it to be even more straighter and want it to feel thinner. Also, is it true is makes hair shinier??

omgshh.. you and i have the same hair. except mine is very wavy. I LOVE MY STRAIGHTENER. yes get one. and dont buy a cheap one.. you can tell the difference trust me.. i have an 80 dollar one (called a wigo) and it make my hair shiny.. smooth,.. feel thinner.. and VERY soft. its called a wigo. you can fiind straighteners like that for really cheap on ebay.com.
they are not for people with curly hair.. theyre for both. a remington is a really good straightener.. its not expensive either. the ones at walmart sometimes have reallllly good ones.. it just depends on if your lucky. the best kind of straightener is a chi. they are expensive. but oh my is there a difference, best of luck to you!! conairs are good tooo!! and the best kind to get is a one inch.. they can curl you hair too!! ohh.. last thing.. your best bet is a zoe straightener. theyre cheap.. (i attached one.) and they are AMAZING, they curl as well.

  • The Chi is the BEST straightener there is. I wish that I could let everyone try mine once and they would be hooked. I have a friend that is spanish and her hair is super curly and it gives her shiny, smooth straight hair. Its hot in about 10 seconds. My hair is wavy, but coarse, so cheap straighteners just make it look damaged. And it takes forever to get through all of it because it's so thick. When I use my Chi, it takes about 10 minutes and I'm ready to walk out the door. I also use a product called "after party" if it's really dry out. The chi is about $130.00, but worth every single penny. It took me about 2 years of borrowing my mom's and my sister's before I took the plunge and spent the money. Now I wish I had done it 10 years ago.
  • Sure you can use a straightener. A STRAIGHTENER will not add shine, but you can put Henna in your hair, some people call this a cellophane. It is like putting hair color in your hair, but it is a Henna Shine. Better let a professional do it, if you are doing both processes. You can just go to a beauty supply store and buy a hair shine product to put in your hair every day if you decide against the Henna.
  • If you get a ceramic straightener, it will make your hair shinier.

I have pretty straight hair, but it does have an annoying wave. So I straighten my hair. And it doesn't make your hair feel thinner unless you're doing it wrong or have a straightener that'll damage your hair.

But people with straight hair will straighten it so that it looks more finished, too.
  • My hair is just like you explained, wavy-ish. A straightener just makes it look stick straight and gives the appearance of thinner hair. And I love it! It also does make it shinier. I use my mine for special occasions bc i don't want to damage my hair. If your mom won't get you one then you can get one almost anywhere for pretty cheap. Hope this helped!
  • Well yeah, I have wavy hair, not curly and I sometimes straighten my hair. Straightening won't make it shinier you have to put product in it, that most hairstylist put in after. I forgot what it's called but just a small drop of that stuff works.
